In order to create a beautiful and natural harmonious facial expression and oral cavity, one needs to replicate the “morphology” and “color” of natural teeth. For morphology it is important to replicate the size of the tooth, its length, position in the dental arch, and symmetry, as well as replication of a surface that expresses the texture of natural teeth. A combination of dental morphology and smile line (positional relations between the teeth) that are in harmony with the patient’s facial expression, are not fixed to just one pattern.  Many combinations are possible. The final decision on the restoration is made by reconsidering both the diagnostic model and the provisional restoration, thereby creating an esthetic restoration with a facial expression that is in harmony with nature. One can replicate dental color expression, through knowledge of the dental layers that create color, and by replicating dentin and enamel layers. I will talk about the importance of natural morphology and color expression for esthetic prosthetics, by introducing patient cases which include laminate veneers, press ceramics, zirconium crowns and implant restorations.
