Rational approach to guided computer surgery: science, experience and common sense

The prosthetically guided implant placement has always been considered as one of the main factors to ensure the long-term success of both simple and complex restorations. Computer guided surgery was initially criticized for the inevitable presence of discrepancies between the virtual and real implant positions. However, thanks to the clinical experience gained over the years, and the improvement of operational tools, guided computer surgery is now a reliable tool for the clinician. Among the new advantages of this procedure is obviously the integration of computer-aided planning with emerging digital technologies. In fact, we know that the digital revolution is changing the world, and dentistry is no exception. But while it is true that, thanks to the development of new technologies, diagnosis and treatment of patients are becoming simpler and more efficient, there is still no scientific evidence that new digital protocols are superior to traditional protocols. From this point of view, clinicians, technicians and companies must work in synergy to develop increasingly accurate and precise protocols in order to obtain safe and predictable implantoprosthetic treatments.

The purpose of this presentation is to tell the story of over 10 years of clinical experience and research, starting from analog protocols to the most modern fully digital protocols, performing a critical analysis and always supported by scientific evidence.
